Beyond the Gifts: A Journey of Hope in Makoko
Makoko is often described as the “Venice of Africa,” a community on water, built on stilts and strength. But behind the beauty of its resilience lies a harsh reality—poverty, limited access to education, and an overwhelming sense of neglect. Yet, in the middle of it all, there are children—bright-eyed, full of potential, and holding tightly to dreams that stretch far beyond the narrow alleys and wooden homes.
It was to this community that our team at the J.O. Obaniyi Foundation recently went—armed not with fanfare, but with love, humility, and a deep desire to give what we could. Our goal was simple: to remind the children of Makoko that they matter, that someone sees them, and that their dreams are valid.
We came bearing school packs, each one filled with essential items to help them return to school with dignity—books, pencils, pens, water bottles and other learning materials. In total, we were able to reach 100 children. A hundred faces lit up with joy as they received their packs. A hundred smiles that made every moment of preparation worth it.
But the truth is, the children were far more than a hundred. They came in hundreds, drawn by the sound of music, by the hope that maybe—just maybe—they would not be left out. And as much as it broke our hearts, we simply couldn’t reach them all.
Still, we held on to gratitude. We were able to give, and that alone is a miracle in a world where needs often outweigh the means. In addition to the school packs, we also gave a cash donation to support the community and assist with urgent needs. It may not solve every problem, but it is a step—one that we hope will ripple into something even greater.
The Makoko outreach was a reminder of why we exist as a foundation—to stand in the gap, to lift, to empower, and to bring hope to the forgotten. Every outreach teaches us something new. This time, we were reminded that impact is not always measured in numbers but in the depth of what we give and how we give it.
We saw firsthand how education can still be a luxury for some children. We saw how a simple school pack could light up a child’s world. We saw that hope is powerful, especially when it’s backed by action.
This is only the beginning. Makoko still needs us. The children still need us. And we need you. If 100 children could be helped because a few people chose to care, imagine what we could do if more hands joined in.
Let’s do more. Let’s reach the ones who walked away empty-handed. Let’s give them a reason to believe again.
Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and prayed. You are part of something deeply meaningful. We are committed to going further, reaching more, and changing stories—one child, one family, one community at a time.
Together, we can make the forgotten feel seen. Together, we can light up Makoko.
